From the very early days of the Erie Canal more than 200 years ago dogs have been on the canal with their canal boat families. Dog lovers are invited to share the unique canal cruise experience with their dogs on September 20 at 3 pm.
“Our last two dog cruises were a great success, and we could not have asked for better behaved guests,” explained Mike Murphy, founder and owner of Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises.
This year’s cruise is the Third Annual Dog Canal Cruise and the Sweet Sam Memorial Cruise. Sam was a yellow labrador retriever who was a longtime SPCA therapy dog and who served as host to the canine guests. He loved boating and the water. Sadly, he died in May at age 13.
Sam was the beloved companion of Western New York Family's longtime travel columnist Deborah Williams.
Help set a dog record in this year of celebration for the 200th anniversary of the canal.
Dogs are free. Reservations are required. Donations will be collected for the Niagara SPCA. Call 716-433-6155 or visit lockportlocks.com.
