Children ages seven through twelve are invited to celebrate Columbus Day at the History Center of Niagara County on Monday, October 12, 2015 from 10am to 1pm. “Be a Sailor on Columbus’ Crew” will give young mariners the opportunity to experience activities that were necessary for seamen to know if they wanted to join Christopher Columbus in his voyage to the New World.
The “swabbies” will learn the function of each part of the ship; try their hand at tying sailors’ knots; sing sea chanties while “hoisting up” the rigging; identify star constellations used in sea navigation and make a small boat model with sails to float on a mini “ocean.” Crew members will also see how well they know their captain in a “To Tell the Truth” activity. A ship’s ration will be distributed at 12 noon.
“Be a Sailor on Columbus’ Crew” is the first of four school holiday programs being offered by the History Center this year. The others are Veterans’ Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day. The cost of each program is $10.00 per child. Reservations are required. Parents are encouraged to leave their children for the duration of the program.
Please call or email the History Center at 716-434-7433 or firstname.lastname@example.org for reservations and more information.
